A multitude of sightseeing and sports opportunities are all available within a short distance from Cortijo El Castano. This area is of great interest to botanists, birdwatchers, writers and painters alike.

Facilities and sports available in the Alpujarras:

The ski season is from the beginning of December until the end of March and the resort in the Sierra Nevada mountains is just over an hours drive away. Decide, on the day, whether to go skiing, to the beach, or both! There are over 70 kms of wide pistes and plenty of restaurants and bars in the ski resort. From the higher pistes you can see the coast of Africa on a clear day.

The Alpujarras is fantastic walking country with spectacular scenery. We can arrange guided walks, self-led walks or wildlife trips with a local qualified wildlife expert. Any level of walking can be undertaken from strenuous, trekking up Spains highest peak, Mulhacen, to ambling through the tranquil white washed villages of Las Alpujarras. Discover the snow capped mountains and hidden valleys of the Sierra Nevada. A company that we can recommend for walking, trekking, mountaineering and ski touring is Spanish Highs. Trekking in the mountains – go for just a few hours or several days, depending on how keen you are. For those of you who cannot ride, this might be the ideal opportunity to take lessons. Caballo Blanco is a local riding/trekking centre. For more information click here.
